Used to have one, and it wasn't a bad compromise. OK as long as you didn't
take it anywhere too challenging, because of the low ground clearance. Also
very noisy if you fitted it with anything except road tyres, which limited
it further off road, but OK otherwise, if a bit expensive to service. Parts
cost a fortune if I remember right. I'm not certain the handling was
particularly good at speed on muddy roads, and, like many four wheel drives,
it was a bitch in a four wheel skid.
Most reasonable 4WD I ever used was an Isuzu Trooper, which would climb a
cliff with the right tyres, cost a shade over 20k new, and was very
reasonable second hand. Lots of space in it and quite tough - we used to
carry rocks and old engines and all sorts of crap in it. Dogs used to live
in it when I went fishing. Not much acceleration and hairy round corners at
any speed (particularly with dogs in it). Had a couple of Discoveries,
excellent off-road (same chassis as the Defender), but expensive to service,
always leaking oil (just like the Defender) and no acceleration whatsoever.
Not having much need for a 4WD these days, I have got a Peugeot 406 V6 auto
estate, and I can honestly say I don't think I have ever liked a car so
much. Goes like a female dog in an interesting condition.
