Quite a lot of it seems to be slightly defective copies of genes in
current use - the analogy Dawkins makes is with his hard drive, on
which there are several copies of most files, with the previous
copies "deleted" which just means the operating system doesn't point
to them any more.
Taking it out and installing a second copy of the immune system
genes, or other useful systems would be interesting.
Once one starts genefixing of course the loss of the source for
variant DNA which that spare stuff represents is of less
significance.
