Press Conference on Israeli Human Rights Violations in Jerusalem and the
Palestinian Response
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
14 December 1998
Lobby for Human Rights in Jerusalem
_____________________________________________________________________
In flagrant disregard of international law and both legal and moral norms,
Israel continues to judaize Jerusalem and expel Palestinian Jerusalemites
through the explicitly discriminatory policies of ID card confiscation,
settlement expansion, and home demolition.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
and UN Resolution 194, the Lobby for Human Rights in Jerusalem calls a press
conference to expose current Israeli human rights violations in Jerusalem and
give voice to Palestinian communities and institutions resisting the occupation
in East Jerusalem. The conference will be held on Thursday 17 December, at
11am in the Al-Kasaba Theater, 2 Abu Abaida St., Al Nuzha Bldg, East Jerusalem.*
The meeting will focus on the consequences of these policies and evaluate
immediate and effective responses to these violations. The conference will hold
a panel of representatives from five resistance communities (the Jahalin
Bedouin, Sumoud Camp, BirOna, French Hill, and Silwan) as well as
representatives from the Orient House, Waqf, and the PLC. A tour of the 15
month old Sumoud Camp will then be lead in order to personalize Israeli policies
of eviction and show how one Palestinian Jerusalemite community resists forced
transfer.
The Lobby calls on the local and international community to support Palestinians
in their resistance. The Lobby also demands that pressure be placed on the
Israeli state to implement the UN resolutions which reaffirm the right to
restitution and a full withdrawal from the territories occupied in 1967, and to
stop their current policies of ethnic cleansing.
* The address has been changed from the World Vision Office to the Al-Kasaba
Theater.
