A PART-TIME MA IN DOCUMENTARY RESEARCH IN THE CENTRE OF LONDON
The Media School at the London College of Printing now offers a part-time MA
in Documentary Research at Back Hill in Clerkenwell. Attendance is one day a
week for two years, starting in January. The fees are under £400.
This is not a production course but a highly practical course in documentary
pre-production, from initial idea to shooting plan. Students learn about
research, treatments, the history of documentary, the legal and ethical
framework of documentary production, the structures of documentary
production in the UK and Europe, and related skills like interviewing and
pitching.
The course emulates the Media School's highly praised MA in Screenwriting
and is based around workshops, lectures, seminars and screenings. There are
close links with the industry, with visiting lectures by film makers and
industry executives. The Course Leader is Michael Chanan, documentary film
maker and film historian.
The College operates an equal opportunities policy and welcomes the widest
range of applications. Normally you be over 21 and will have a first degree
in film practice or theory, or another relevant subject such as photography,
journalism, or the social sciences, but it might be in another discipline,
but you do not need a first degree if you can demonstrate relevant
professional experience and an aptitude for academic study. Selection will
be through interview. Foreign applicants are welcome from those who can
demonstrate a good command of spoken and written English.
Applications are now invited for January 1999. Contact Sandra Borley at
