Yes you can spend a lot less, this is the way to do it.
Route 1 - buy a UNIX box and keep it for two years.
Route 2 - buy a PC that is slower than the unix box and keep it for
a year.
- at the end of that year buy another PC that is much faster than the
UNIX box (cos there is a years worth of development)
With route 2 you should have enough spare change for a printer,
scanner and tape drive as well.
