>ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
>
>Over the past ten years, new interventions to support child access have
>been developing for families going
>through divorce or separation and for families where children have been
>removed from homes following
>abuse and neglect. A range of services have been developing independently
>across countries and
> internationally: "meeting places", child access centers, and supervised
>visitation programs.
>
>This movement which is widespread and takes different forms in different
>countries raises many questions
>which, to date, have not been discussed in an international forum.
>
>Why has the goal of maintaining parent-child contact lead to such a
>mobilization of mental health and
>social service professionals?
>
>What are the similarities and differences among services which emphasize
>safety and visit supervision
>and those that emphasize supporting parent-child relationships?
>
>To what extent does the work of these programs shed light on changing
>family structures and changing
>concepts of parenthood?
>
>To respond to these questions, this Conference will gather those involved
>with child access programs: service
>providers, judges, lawyers, researchers, and academics.
>
>Presentations and discussion will revolve around the following themes:
>
> · A comparison of services provided: who does what and why?
>
>· Common problems in the development of services (training and
>accreditation of visit supervisors, funding,
>standards for practice).
>
> · The relationship between child access programs and social service and
>legal institutions (the definition of
>their mission, the question of their independence)
>
>· The place of these services in the evolution of family relations
>(maintenance of parent-child contact,
>redefinition of parenthood; their role in issues of relationships between
>fathers and mothers)
>
>The Conference will offer an opportunity to understand better this rapidly
>developing form of social
>intervention and to contribute to its evolution.
>
