Bob and Geoff,
There has been some discussion in recent years within the information
technology research community about the use of ethnography as a means of
finding out the requirements of potential users of new technology. With
current governmental attempts to bring the benefits of advanced integrated
computing and communications into education, in the UK and other parts of
Europe, there may well be an industrial interest in applications of
ethnography to advanced IT for educational applications.
My comment/suggestion for your Round Table is that it should include
discussion of the industrial application of ethnography for evaluation or
requirements capture in IT, and participation in the network by both the
academic and industrial research communities in Europe.

>Dear All,
>This year's EERA conference is in Ljubljana next week. Geoff and myself
>are co-ordinating a Round Table discussion on the how we can develop a
>European Ethnography Network. [One of the proposals will be to set up a
>sub list of this generally international one.] There already exist at
>least two other lists, one in Scandanavia and one based in France. Each
>has a different language used as its base. However, we hope we might be
>able to bring the lists and their members closer at a European level.
>Does anyone know of any other lists elsewhere in the Americas or the
>Antipodees or Africa and Asia?
>We are considering making an application for funds from the EEC but know
>that we need some contacts. Can anyone help? If funds were obtained then
>conferences and better organisation and development would hopefully

>We would be grateful for any observations, warnings, ideas and
>perceptions before we travel to EERA, although comments would, of
>course, be useful when we return.
