Hi All,
We have returned from Ljubljana and we had a successful roundtable
meeting. There were people from Slovenia, Austria, Denmark, Sweden,
Italy and England. There were three main issues raised.
* The nature/definition of ethnography. Superficially we decided
it could include qualitative and quantitative methods [so we have to
change this list definition]. One person took the view that it involved
some considerable immersion in the specific research site because
ethnography is the detailed examination of a social setting or people's
perspectives of their lives. It was also pointed out that Harry Wolcott
had done an ethnography on one person. We will develop this issue with
references, opinions, discussions and short papers in the near future.
* The problem of language. After the meeting a few of us wondered
if we could ask bi-lingual members to read submitted papers and write
short summaries for this list according to demand. We will discuss this
later.
* We resolved to ensure that ethnographic methodology and research
projects were highlighted in future ECER conferences. We are also
developing ways of linking with other lists.
We will follow up all these issues later but in the meantime:
Thanks to all those who contributed both by Email and at the conference.
Do contribute any observations using the header above or a more suitable
sub header under our four main headings,
* Ethnographic Experiences
* Ethnographic Issues
* Information
* Advice and Enquiry
