I have had the opportunity to talk in person with Leopold's daughters, Estella
and Nina and one of his graduate students, Art Hawkins and they each refered
to Aldo's spiritual ethical evolution stemming in part from his experience in
watching "the fierce green fire" die in the eyes of the female wolf he shot
early in his career. Of course one has to look at his whole life to get a
clearer picture of what shaped the man but I don't think that it is
unreasonable to suppose that there was a spiritual aspect to his changing view
accompanied by his increased understanding of predator-prey relationships.
Many of his essays in A Sand County Almanac allude to a spiritual nature in
his observations.
