Like Judith, I have been trying to unsubscribe. Following the
instructions at the end of the bulletin seem to have failed. Does this
mean the 'dis-forum' itself is subscribed? Should members maybe have a
choice about it?

> TENACITY WINS FOR JACOBS FAMILY!...
>
>
> In Fort Belvoir, Virginia the Fairfax County Public Schools
> decided, after months of debate, that five year old Collin
> Jacobs will be able to attend elementary school with the rest
> of his kindergarten-age friends this fall. Collin, a bright,
> sociable boy whose Cerebral Palsy significantly affects his
> motor skills, is excited about attending school with his twin
> sister, Laura and his older sister, Sarah.
>
> During his two years in a Fairfax County pre-school, his
> teachers, parents, and school district psychologists agreed
> that Collin learns best in a regular classroom setting. A
> disagreement arose, however, when Collin's parents, Chief
> Warrant Officer Paul and Jill Jacobs, asked that Collin be
> allowed to attend his neighborhood school. In Fairfax County,
> children with significant disabilities have customarily been
> bussed to Special Education centers in schools separate, and
> oftentimes distant, from their homes.
>
> The newly constructed, 15 million dollar Fairfax County
> school is completely accessible and, as one of the school
> district's integrated service-model schools, can fully
> accommodate Collin's educational needs. This, coupled with
> a supportive military community and the endorsement of
> Collin's former teachers, spurred the school district
> administration to recommend last week that he be given the
> opportunity to receive an education in what is known as a
> "full inclusion" environment.
>
> The Jacobs family is elated with the Fairfax County
> Public Schools' compliance with the Individuals with
> Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA mandates that,
> to the fullest extent possible, children with disabilities
> should be included in regular classes with supplementary
> aids and services. A state's receipt of education funds
> from the Federal Government is dependent upon its
> compliance with the requirements of IDEA.
>
> In response to the school district's decision, Collin's Mother,
> Jill said, "On Collin's behalf, we would like to thank FCPS
> officials for recognizing their responsibility to educate our
> son as they would any other non-disabled Fairfax County student.
> We are grateful to FCPS teachers and administrators for choosing
> to see Collin's ability first and foremost, and to prepare
> accordingly for the accommodations presented by his disability.
> We would like to congraulate Dr. Daniel Domenech, Superintendent
> of Schools, Dr. Alice Farling, Superintendent of Special
> Education, and Betsy Fenske, Principal of Fort Belvoir
> Elementary for the leadership they have shown today. "Chief
> Warrant Officer Jacobs added, "We would like to publicly
> commend Fairfax County officials for their committment not
> only to Collin, but for making evident today their intention
> to move forward with a plan that will allow children with
> disabilities in Fairfax County to be educated in their
> neighborhhod schools, if their families so choose. We are
> very pleased that Fairfax County Public School officials have
> faith in their own special and general education personnel.
> We do, too."
>
> In closing, the Jacobs family noted "We would like to
> thank all of those who have supported us; local, state
> and national disability advocates, the Fort Belvoir
> community, and particularly the disability advocacy
> organization TASH, Assist Consulting, and Collin's legal
> counsel from the law firm of Weil, Gotschal, & Manges."
>
> [WAPD NOTE] Our warmest congratulations go to Paul, Jill,
> Sarah, Laura, and Collin Jacobs. We are very happy at this
> outcome!.. See: July 27..BEACON for [dis]ABILITY Letters to

> A very strong refusal to give up and beliefs of "If It's

> Presents For The Teacher
>
> On the last day of kindergarten, all the children
> brought presents for their teacher. The florist's
> son handed the teacher a gift. She shook it, held
> it up and said, "I bet I know what it is - it's
> some flowers!" " Right!" shouted the little boy.
>
> Then the candy store owner's daughter handed the
> teacher a gift. She held it up, shook it and said.
> "I bet I know what it is - it's a box of candy!"
> "That's right!" shouted the little girl.
>
> The next gift was from the liquor store owner's son.
> The teacher held it up and saw that it was leaking.
> She touched a drop with her finger and tasted it.
> "Is it wine?" she asked. "No," the boy answered.
> The teacher touched another drop to her tongue.
> "Is it champagne?" she asked. "No," the boy answered.
> Finally, the teacher said, "I give up. What is it?"
> The boy replied, "A puppy!"
