The OU has just completed a pilot study of StudyScan in two of our regions:
East Anglia(me) and West Midlands (Vicki Goodwin). We are currently writing
up our findings. We also had a very useful meeting with Dorota Zdzienski.
The package is being marketed by ISL who sold us the old version but failed
to send us the update in January. We have just managed to get hold of the
update and will be running the data through again. I don't want to predict
the outcome of the report so the following is my own opinion as I see things
so far:
My feeling is that this package should be accepted* but the output needs
some interpretation. It would probably be more acceptable if the assessment
report and its recommendations were to be 'signed off' by a qualified
individual (Ed. Psych or SpL Diplomate). We are hoping to work with Dorota
on some guidelines for interpreting the output from the computer assessment
and hope to get some money for this soon. The problem will be convincing the
LEAs. This is not a problem for the OU as our students do not qualify for
DSA (as yet). It seems that our exams admin are happy to provide exams
facilities based on an assessment carried out in this way but 'signed off'
by Vicki (who has the diploma).
*StudyScan comprises a battery of relevant tests (some well proven, some new
and relevant to adults) which are applied in a more consistent way than by
various individuals and many students report that they find it more
comfortable, more adult than being assessed by a human!
I think this is all I can say at this stage.
