British Computer Society
Electronic and Multimedia Publishing Specialist Group
European-funded Electronic Publishing Projects
==============================================
A one-day seminar
Wednesday 11 November
School of Oriental and African Studies, London
9.30 to 5.30
Over the last ten years the Group has held meetings on a wide range of
topics, while in parallel over the last five years the European
Commission has been funding research projects in what it calls
Information Engineering (now renamed Interactive Electronic Publishing),
although, of course, Esprit projects have been running for much longer.
However, the topics covered by group meetings have only peripherally
covered the projects funded by the Commission; for example, Aquarelle
was discussed at the meeting on Museums and Art Galleries.
As the Commission's Fifth Framework is about to be launched, this seems
to be a good time to remedy this omission and organise a meeting
specifically covering EC projects. We have been lucky enough to obtain
Bernard Smith, Head of Information Engineering at DG XIII, as our lead
speaker, as well as Paul Ayscough from the DTI, while Lindsay MacDonald
will report on a Information Engineering meeting on Managing Digital
Assets, for which he was the rapporteur.
The rest of the day, chaired by David Penfold, who has acted as
Evaluator and Reviewer for both Information Engineering and Esprit, will
mainly be given over to speakers who will discuss Information
Engineering projects in which they are or have been partners, commenting
perhaps on their interactions with the Commission. However, in order to
provide a balance, there will also be three speakers on other projects,
one funded by Info2000, one by the Leonardo programme, and finally
Imprimatur, which is a DG III Esprit project.
