EDITOR'S SPACE
After announcing the DRS website and giving the wrong URL,
perhaps I had better start this month's edition by restating it
here (correctly):
http://www.drs.org.uk
I have just returned from another interesting IDATER conference
with, for the second year, a DRS session. This year there was a
considerable increase in the number of applications for paper
presentations. Paul Pankhurst of PDD Ltd. gave the DRS keynote,
discussing his group's work in relation to changes in technology
and practices and the opportunities these changes offer. It was
so good to see design researchers from many different countries,
but also to put a face to several more readers of this newsletter
from South Africa, Brazil, Turkey, Australia, USA etc.
Proceedings are published and are available now - see the IDATER
website
<http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/cd/Docs_DandT/idater/
index.html>
or email <[log in to unmask]> for details.
We have already decided to work again with IDATER next year, and
there will shortly be a call for papers for a newly defined DRS
thread for 1999 - watch this space!

ANNOUNCEMENTS & CALLS FOR PAPERS
* 26-27 November 1998: CALL FOR PAPERS: International Workshop
on Similarity Methods, University of Stuttgart, Germany
A scientific and interdisciplinary international work- shop
for central questions of model building with - similarity, -
analogy, and - symmetry in mathematics, physics, engineering,
and related areas.
http://www.isd.uni-stuttgart.de/pigroup/similarity.html
REASONS
Besides practical successful engineering applications,
similarity analysis is also heavily used in the early
conceptual stages of almost any scientific model building.
The technique of dimensional analysis is used there as a
verification tool and in mathematics, physics, and
engineering, the method of group transformations has a fixed
place in the analytical treatment and the subsequent solution
process of differential equations.
The international workshop on similarity methods starts
exactly at this point and emphasises the interdisci- plinary
synergies and cross fertilisation capabilities of similarity
theory techniques.
The international workshop on similarity methods aims at
bringing together researchers interested and working in
similarity methods for a two day meeting with presentations
on all aspects of the topics of similarity, analogy, and
symmetry. It is intended that the intensive exchange of ideas
and discussions with other researchers will help to stimulate
and progress further research work.

* CALL FOR PAPERS for a Special Issue on WEB-INTEGRATED
MANUFACTURING in INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMPUTER INTEGRATED
MANUFACTURING
The Internet technology has evolved rapidly over the last
decade, due to its capability of accommodating multimedia
functions. Among the multifarious devices in Internet
technology, the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) is the most
popular and visible component. Indeed, the client-server
architecture in WWW also offers tremendous opportunities for
the sharing of information among project groups that possibly
vary in both time and space. Indeed, the Web has been
commonly employed in business, industry, government, and
academia. In the manufacturing sector, the application of
the Web is found in numerous areas, such as quotation and
order processing, customer requirement management, design for
manufacture and assembly, process and production planning,
production and inventory control, after-sales customer
services and feedback, and so on.
The aim of collating this special issue is to provide a forum
for researchers and practitioners to review the past
development, and to identify possible directions for further
developments. Original contributions will be solicited to
further appreciate the Web technology and its relevance to
Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and emphasis will be on
the knowledge and insights accumulated so far, and also on
implications for the future.
Some possible topics for contributions to this special issue
are:
Market research and customer requirement management
Product development and design
Order processing and quotation
Virtual/Rapid prototyping
Supply chain management and logistics

* VADS User Needs Workshop Report Announcement. The Report
containing the results, analysis and recommendations of the
VADS User Needs Workshop, held in Edinburgh April 1998, are
now available at:
http://vads.ahds.ac.uk/wkshp1.html
The VADS User Needs Workshop (April 1998) was a key exercise
in determining the best way in which VADS can expand, develop
and tailor its services to the visual arts community,
including researchers, teachers and students of the visual
arts. As well as providing a snapshot of current practice
among the community, the Workshop was intended to facilitate
the setting up and development of the service in three
crucial respects: * to help us understand more about how
electronic resources are being used now by members of our
community * to help us target the services of VADS more
closely to the community's electronic information provision,
creation and management needs * to help us build up an
accurate picture of what digital resources have been already
created by the community; how they are being used; and what
we can do to help maximise the investment in these resources
From the conclusions of the Workshop, it is possible to
deduce that in order for digital resources to realise their
full potential within the academic community much work now
has to be done supporting and encouraging the visual arts
community in creating high quality resources suitable for
re-use. This can be achieved in a variety of ways including
training and support, with the promotion of subjects relevant
to their field of work, including copyright, cataloguing
standards and resource creation.

QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS
* Andreas Dieberger writes:
How to measure performance of creative people???
This subject line might sound a little odd...
Well here is the problem. I work in a group here at Emory
that does about everything from user interface design over
information design, web and graphics design, to real
multimedia work, but also supports existing sites and
multimedia products, sits in on boring committees and and.
Most of it is creative work, some of it is project based,
other work isn't.
Now they want from all groups in our division to come up with
"performance measures" (exactly: it's Dilbert time again!).
We tried for quite a while to come up with a reasonable way
to do that but so far we failed.
I just realized that other groups / people must have gone
through similar phases before and wondered if anybody could
give us hints and advice what worked for them and what
didn't.
We'd surely appreciate any help me might get in this.
Thank you very much,
Andreas Dieberger
