Seventh International Workshop on Program Comprehension
IWPC '99
May 5-7, 1999
Pittsburgh, PA USA
CALL FOR PAPERS
THEME
Comprehending programs is one of the core software engineering activities.
Program comprehension is needed when one maintains, reuses, migrates,
reengineers, inspects, or enhances software systems.
This workshop will gather practitioners and researchers from academia,
industry, and government, to review the current state of the practice,
to report on program understanding experiments, and to present issues and
solutions in the general area of program comprehension.
Papers related, but not limited to, the following topic areas are invited:
Visualization
- User interfaces, software visualisation and animation;
Architecture
- Recovering system architecture or evaluating system/design compliance
- Understanding systems with a view towards product lines
Integration Frameworks
- Computer Supported Collaborative Understanding (CSCU);
- Understanding systems built using distributed object technology;
- Reuse reengineering and concept assignement processes;
Comprehension Strategies
- Theories and models for software comprehension;
- Cognitive models in program comprehension;
- Guidelines for facilitating program comprehension (based on
observation and experimentation);
- Knowledge, program representation forms and repositories for program
comprehension;
- Program comprehension processes and strategies;
- Reverse engineering strategies to support comprehension;
- Comprehension during large scale maintenance, reengineering, and
migration;
- Tools facilitating software comprehension;
- Experiments with comprehension models;
Decomposition
- New technologies, methods in system decomposition
Empirical Studies
- Case studies in reverse engineering, reengineering, and maintenance
with focus to program understanding;
Program Analysis
- Innovative technologies for reverse engineering;
- New technologies, methods in parsing and grammar design or use
Papers should be original work, approximately 10 proceeding pages or 6000
words. Papers must not have been previously published nor have been
submitted to, or be in consideration for, any journal, book, or conference.
The workshop proceedings will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press.
Authors are expected to present an accepted paper at the workshop in
Pittsburgh.
WORKING SESSIONS
In addition to the regular paper sessions at the 6th IWPC '99, we will be
continuing the successful 1998 program addition of working sessions.
The working sessions are meant to foster interaction and the free exchange of
ideas among workshop participants. We will be accepting proposals for parallel
working sessions to fall under either of the two major themes of "Current
Activities" or "New Opportunities" until February 23, 1998.
TOOL DEMONSTRATIONS
Proposals for tool demonstrations should include a 1-2 page description of the
tool or environment, its applicability to program comprehension, a brief
description of the proposed demonstration, the hardware/software platform
required, and any other requirements. Specify the proposal as "Research
Prototype" or "Vendor Tool."
CONFERENCE LOCATION
IWPC '99 will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA on the campus of
Carnegie Mellon University, home to one of the most respected engineering and
computer science programs in the USA. Pittsburgh, a modern and cosmopolitan
city nestled between three mighty rivers, is waiting to welcome you to enjoy
its invigorating spring afternoons where you can enjoy the hospitality of city
neighborhoods that tell their stories with rich ethnic food, customs, cultures
and celebrations. Pittsburgh boasts one of America's safest downtown
districts, and a magnificent park where three rivers meet: the Golden Triangle.
Pittsburgh has rich cultural attractions with its theaters, synphony, ballet,
museums, and conservatory. In addition it has strong traditions in the major
league sports of football, baseball and hockey. Two Frank Lloyd Wright
masterpieces "Fallingwater" and "Kentuck Knob" are located in the rustic Laurel
Highlands - about a one hour drive from Pittsburgh.
Pennsylvania, the "Keystone State", is home of the writing of the Declaration
of Independence and the US Constitution and home to unbelievable history and
some of the best scenery and recreation in the United States. You can see the
Amish in Lancaster County, photograph the elk herd in Cameron, Clinton and Elk
Counties, hike the mountains of Potter County, horseback ride near the Grand
Canyon of Pennsylvania in Tioga County, raft some white water near Somerset
County, fish Lake Erie in Erie County, roam the mountains of Williamsport and
Lycoming County, visit Harrisburg, the state capital in Dauphin County, walk
the battlefield of Gettysburg in Adams County, ride a train in McKean County,
or explore the Poconos of Monroe County.
Pittsburgh International Airport is reached directly by all national and
international airlines. Pittsburgh is located within a 1 and a half hour plane
ride of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, and Chicago. For more
information please consult the conference Web pages.
