Let me ask if you have considered that perhaps a good portion of modern
poetry attempts to mimic (by literary ritual) a bit of trickery. The
trickery of poetry that simulates the human experience, one of grappling
with reality and fantasy all at once.
This switching between multiple-polar meanings would seem role of poetry.
What part of a single moment of existence is all reality? Or all fantasy?
Chances are we all have a sense that one moment is really both
simultaneously rendered.
The trickery specifically the equivocation between reality and fantasy is
rather common in poetry.
May I go so far as to state that this is a practice employed by many poets
is to seek out by usage of multiple meaning (ambiguity), their analogy, and
reside roughly within the confines of that analogy. The analogy providing a
vision, perhaps looking anew at an ordinary object. Incumbent upon the poet
to seek out the parallel universe of a poem. (The role of the poem often to
find analogy of a small thing illuminate something much greater.)
Say, to compare apples with stones, then unraveling the analogy to comment
on stones. This apple looking stonelike on the ground, of sedimentary means,
igneous, or metamorphic origin. basalt, flint, granite, limestone, marble,
slate, or flagstone.
A technique practiced with increasing regularity is the analogy that
switches back and forth between the fantasy (stone) and reality (apple). So
the effect is one of misdirection. A strange spin on meaning. Thus,
nimbleness, strangeness. And resulting humor when we realize there are
properties of both in each other.
Motivation perhaps implies point of view. Narrator's purpose for drawing the
reader's attention to incident and development (dynamic). The counterplay of
cause-and-effect within the confines of metaphorical analogy.
