The poet of the Aeneid was named Publius Vergilius Maro and was
customarily referred to as Vergilius. In post-classical times this
became corrupted to Virgilius, perhaps through confusion with a
legendary medieval magician by that name (the Latin word virga can
mean "magic wand"), though other explanations are also offered.
The form Virgilius passed into English as Virgil, which remained
standard through the 19th century. In the 20th century some
scholars started using the form Vergil as being more authentic, and
you will find both in use today.
