even the dispatch announcing this show is a gem! From which
- for those who nothing of Chopin the following:
'internationally celebrated as a concrete and sound poet, henri chopin is a
pioneer of recordings using tape recorders and the textures of the human
voice. his use of the corporeal aspect of sound is reminder that language
comes as much from oral traditions as from literature, of its delicate
balance between order and collapse. but chopin is important above all for
his role as a generous entrepreneur of the international avant-garde. poet,
painter, graphic artist and designer, typographer, independent publisher,
film-maker, broadcaster and arts promoter, his innovatory work stands as a
fascinating barometer of european creative practice between the 1950s and
the 1980s. as an unexpected native of essex for 15 years, chopin was a
crucial link between british artists and writers and this tradition. above
all, his classic audio-visual magazines 'cinquieme saison' and 'ou', each
issue containing recordings as well as texts, images, prints and multiples,
brought together international writers and artists such as members of
lettrisme and fluxus, marcel janco, ian hamilton finlay, tom phillips,
mimmo rotella, man ray and many others.'
