Many thanks to Robin, Ira Lightman and Martin Corless-Smith for the courtesy
and carefulness of their contributions. I actually liked Martin's taking me
to task for oppositional dialectics between Jeremy and Derrida: I'll suck a
cube of sugar. And thanks too for Ira's crackling poem with its wiring
instructions.
At Robin's request I was trying to be simple. So here I am knocked to one
knee, slight ache in my ribs, shaking my head to clear it, wondering if I'm
engaged in an over-masculine sport, hoping my left hook still works and --
ding! ding! End of the round, back to the stool.
Er, I suppose that's still oppositional, Martin.
Why end of round? Because I'm busy with a writing project and have only a
fragment of my former library here in Paris -- Derrida and Lacan were among
the philosophy books I left behind in New York. With no easy-reach libraries
and a holiday weekend upcoming I'm not going to be able to provide the Derrida
documentation that Ira very properly demands. (To attack Derrida through
quotation is hard because the quotes are often not easily liftable and the
texts bristle with defences.) Anyway, apologies to Ira in advance: I'll
reply as best as I can to all three within a couple of days.
And please call me Doug. Only a few intimate family call me Douglas: when
Alice and friends do they're being sarcastic. So Ira's inclusion of my name
as often as in direct mail automatic name-insertion makes my unconscious read
his comments as sarcastic when actually he's being nice and also very cogent!
Best
Doug
