As regards your comments about 1685 , 1750 etc, surely these were both
periods when Meter was not being very well used, and Poetry was on rather a
down! After all Akenside is not the greatest moment in English poetry,
metrically or otherwise. And in 1685 Dryden stands pretty well alone.
The curious thing is the way that the big poetic periods tend to coincide
with effective metrical usage. 1580-1620 say, where everything seems so
assured. Perhaps it is a question of an engine everyone understands...
Yes Prynne definitely gets more involved rhythmically as he gets older.
