Hi all. I would like to elaborate a little on that _Renga: A
Chain of Poems_ that I mentioned, which was put together by Paz,
Roubaud, Sanguineti, and Tomlinson. In case you'd like examples
of a different type of collaboration. The way these poets did
their collaboration was to create a sequence of 27 sonnets
divided into four sections. Each of the authors provided a
quatrain, tercet, or couplet to each sonnet in his own language.
Then the one who opened a sonnet section would write the last
sonnet of the section he opened. (This info comes from the
blurb on the back of the book.) The result is that the sonnets
can be read both vertically and horizontally. On the left hand
side of the page is the sonnet in the four poet's own language.
Tomlinson then translated the sonnets into English and these are
printed on the right hand side of the page. In this
collaborative effort all the work of each poet is clearly
identified as his own (since we can see the languages of the
original sonnet). (In other words "renga" doesn't have to be
limited to the Japanese style renga and it is possible to let
the individual and identifiable voices stand on their own and
then meld into the communal voice through the whole.) _Renga_
is a pretty exciting work and according to one critic, "it
consecrates the internationalization of poetry." To me, this
type of collaborative effort is perfect for the Internet.
