Ric, Douglas,
thanks for responses so far... one thing I'd defintiely like to clear up
is that I'm not trying to stand up for brave wee Scotland, in the context
of this group or anywhere else, certainly not England-bashing (this is the
whole point), certainly not trying to claim Scotland was ever a colony.
In fact, the refusal to do theory in Scottish English departments is
suicidal, defeatist, and causes me great distress. What I'd like to do now
is take some of the good historical work which has been done, plus
poetry criticism (IHF is a growth area), and theorize them in order to get
beyond this very wooden and useless idea of national cultural identity
which we're currently stuck with.
Another question: does anyone enjoy the work of IHF?
Also interested in comments on the 'poetics' of James Kelman, Irvine
Welsh.
cheers
Michael Gardiner.
