Subject: Universities Advertising Group
Dear Owner/Moderator
I am asking you to inform your list members of a new website created
by a consortium of Universities. I would be grateful, therefore, if
you would consider posting the following message to your List Members.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
START OF MESSAGE:
Universities and other institutions of Higher Education currently
annually spend in excess 30 million pounds on recruitment
advertising. The increasing use of the Internet as a communications
medium, presents Higher Education with an opportunity to
substantially reduce this figure and allow the money to be channelled
back to universities to be spent on education.
Accordingly, the Universities Advertising Group - a purchasing
consortium of universities and institutions of higher education -
have established a new national recruitment website. The site can be
found at:
http://www.jobs.ac.uk
Jobs.ac.uk has been created to be a convenient way for staff and
students to look for suitable job vacancies and has the formal
approval and support of the Higher Education Funding Councils for
England, Wales and Scotland. The website will carry advertisements for
vacant posts, fellowships, scholarships and other such items of
interest to those in Higher Education and Further education. This
will provide UK institutions of Higher and Further Education with a
facility to advertise vacancies at significantly lower cost than is
feasible in the daily or weekly press (or other Internet providers).
The site is not intended to replace any existing academic service.
Instead, it is meant to complement recruitment practices in UK
academic institutions. Operated in a commercial manner (but for
the benefit of the community) jobs.ac.uk will protect the academic
sector from future exploitation by commercial organisations. In a
sense 'united we stand, divided we fall.
The site has been live for four months now and has received adverts
for over 2000 academic positions. These have ranged from research
posts and lectureships through to chairs and senior administrative
staff. Over 140 institutions are currently supporting the venture
and more institutions join each week.
We have recently added new features to our site, including a Direct
Mailing Facility. This service allows users to register their email
address with us and be sent the sort of vacancies they are interested
in. This is just one of many developments we have planned for the
future.
Jobs.ac.uk has been created for the benefit of all members of the
academic community. It will provide an increasingly valuable service
for the community particularly if it is supported by members of the
community. The wider the existence of jobs.ac.uk becomes known amongst
academics, staff and students the sooner it will become a viable
alternative to expensive newspaper advertising. I ask you, therefore,
to please our visit jobs.ac.uk and help support this venture.
END OF MESSAGE
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The posting of this message is all I ask of you. I would expect no
other commitment or obligation on your part whatsoever.
If you require any further clarification please do not hesitate to
contact me.
