Dear All: Hope this helps. I asked Peter Forbes for info re Poetry Review's
circulation since 1970 and here is his reply:
"Dear David: This is not an exact science and record keeping has never been
the PoSoc's strong point. The bare bones are that the print run was 3500
when I arrived, about 3000 of which were being sold. This was the Mick Imlah
era. I think the run had increased somewhat in Andrew Motion's time. We've
been selling around 4500-4700 for some time now. The New Generation issue
sold out 7500 but we've not found a way of repeating that. To go into
further detail would be to invent. Legend had it that the circulation
collapsed in the Mottram period but I don't think it was that dramatic. The
great truth is that the circulation of the Review isn't as responsive to
contents as you might think. There's a kind of buffer of people who seem to
subscribe irrespective of what we're doing and it's hard to bring new people
in."
>From the horse's mouth, then.
Best wishes,
David
