LONDON TALK SERIES
12 February (Thursday): Ken Edwards: "The Two Poetries"
"I propose a short discourse on the phenomenon, never acknowledged
publicly in this country, that (as an apparatchik at the South Bank once
told me) ‘There are two kinds of poetry in this country: poetry and
Cambridge poetry' –‘Cambridge poetry' being this person's shorthand for
‘innovative', ‘avantgarde', ‘language-centred', what you will....the
poetry that dares not speak its name, or have its name spoken. I'll talk
about why I publish (and write!) the kind of poetry I do, about paradigms
and paradigm shifts, about closure/open forms, transparent
language/material language. I may compare an Allen Fisher poem with one by
Matthew Sweeney."
