Paul Dutton commenced his latest visit to Europe with contributions to the
wf workshop today... Other contributors were Bob Cobbing (_I seem to be
making a book about Japan_), Lawrence Upton reading extracts from his w.i.p.
_Possibles_, Johan de Wit _a statement and three poems_, Rob Holloway and
Cobbing and Upton improvorming a new piece by Cobbing. Paul read a range of
pieces, improvised a fine non-verbal piece after Bob said _give us some
sound and fury Paul_ and then finished, at his suggestion, in a trio along
with Cobbing and Upton which consisted of wilder and wilder variations on
_shall we do it I think we should_
I first came across Paul Dutton as a member of The Four Horseman in the mid
70s when they came to London for a sound poetry festival. But he's still
working and moving, operating at the meeting points between music and poetry
I hope you will come along and see him on Tuesday... To sort of echo
something Keston said there are more people prepared to say they like
this area or to talk about that than actually turn up to hear it. We had a
good audience today, mind you - swollen by musicians...
I was surprised at how many messages there were here on a Saturday too...
but then, flipping through them I came on the phrase _no structure_
dear me, I thought that one was dead
mind you it got me in the mood for the categories _good_ and by
implication _not good_... quite takes me back to the mediocrity of my
second rate secondary education
and this word _mainstream_... could I point out that for the last couple of
years this term *should have been applied to an excellent if maladministered
little press publishing mottram, templeton, de wit, the proceedings of the
first Cork conference and clarke
those to whm this term is being misapplied should now be referred to as _the
others_ or perhaps _Independent poets_ (It isn't and nor are you) or
anything else but not Mainstream
So don't forget Paul Dutton. He's off to Holland and then back to Toronto -
so grab him, metaphorically, while you can
Not only can you hear Paul Dutton on Tuesday Upstairs 3 cups Sandland St
London wc1 but you get thrown in the latest issue of svp mag 98-13 which has
a chunk of Johan de Wit - his poems have structure *and they are good
