Celan is such a parsimonious writer about poetry, for which I can only in
the end admire him. I wish I were not myself so prolix, I often
consider it a kind of weakness. His image of a poem as a message in a
bottle is a terrifyingly lonely one, although I think a true one, and he
had the courage to admit it. Among other things.
He said something else I attempt to engrave in my poetic practice,
although the attempt is never the same as the attainment of an ideal -
"Only truthful hands can write true poetry".
