"deliberate, Cynic unpreparedness", as with many
other terms in this rather too stable universe
of meanings and types, I am trying to suggest,
is a *transitory* state: what one does, exactly,
by measures solely designed to (David Trotter's
phrase) "the making of the reader" ie separating
one's special attentive, intimate reader from a
"sluggish mass" (Andrea B's phrase) is remove
not those of "deliberate, Cynic unpreparedness"
but, exactly, *those of deliberate, Cynic
unpreparedness when reading the cover/the first
page/in the first month/year/decade of holding
the book*. This argument so far followed makes
no allowance for Nietszche's idea of (I paraphrase):
resist me with all your might, only then will I
trust your allegiance. Or (Davie): a grudging respect
is not just better than none, but sweeter than
any. Everything exists, and can be brought to any
of my things or your things: correcting sounds like
cleansing, even in this small ethnicity, waiting
to get bigger than the other guy's,
