Speckled Thrasher
("Recent studies of the cheeping patterns in birds
reflect a heavy reliance on non-conformist devices,
coupled with odd syllabic cadences, representing a refreshing departure
from traditional ornithological context." --- News Item
A fluid otherworldly form
the newfound speckled thrasher’s song
conforms to no set rules
of traditional birdsong.
The departure from the fixed patterns
of well-established rigid ornithological songs
has occurred this spring in the wood.
The song of the thrashers misunderstood.
The larks have fled the wood.
The nightingales have fled the wood.
And at morning light, nonetheless
the speckled thrashers relish in self-expression.
They greet the morning light with sweet tender rage,
opaque they cheep the coming New Age.
