Dear B-Poets
All due respect to John Wilkinson but I'm not at all sure that it's such a
good thing to go around recommending poets on a site like this. It implies
a community of interest with agreed premises and hence expectations, of
which I can see no trace. Having viewed the range of persons involved and
read the various forms of address they go in for, I'm sure there are people
on this list to whom the work of John Wilkinson would mean absolutely
nothing. And vice versa.
It's easy to get madly enthusiastic and start shouting "rush out and buy
this book!" like something on TV but if there is no operative treaty you're
saying it to the air. Accurate description of and quotation from what
you're trying to sell would make sure quite a few people DIDN'T rush out
and buy it.
The distances between some of the poems which have been pasted up around
here recently seem to me to be greater than those between most poems in
(for instance) the Bloodaxe NEW POETRY and CONDUCTORS OF CHAOS. Where,
then, is the Mainstream? Personally I think the whole notion of Community
of any kind in the Arts is a chimera.
