- perhaps the only thing which would stop me embracing the
multiplicity of global local speeches which this thread seems to be
leading t'wards is the Chatham (Medway) dialect which I grew up with
and which (I'm told) returns to me when I'm mortal drunk. It's
dreadful - the linguistic equivalent of scraping fingernails down a
blackboard, or the whining noise gulls make on a pile of fishwaste
(two other sounds I connect with that period of my life). It's truely
local - distinct from cockney or the various estuarine forms - is
stable, can be shown to have lasted a long time, resists invasion, and
is utterly devoid of charm. I can't imagine how the locals breed in
order to perpetuate it, since any necessary endearments murmured
during the process would have the allure and aphrodisia of a rusty
bandsaw on tin.
Just wanted to do my bit for non-PC-ness.
