.
pinpricks pullulate at daybreak
mustard-seed-sized meteorites
punch through paper-thin hulls
in airless space in anxiety dreams
where planets roll like eyes in sleep
their massive molten beauty
collapsing back to colourless dots
in the space of the whirling scantlings
which scintillate in the conscious mind
the mind behind the sightless gaze
that fixes on eggshell fragments
crumbs of bread on a breakfast plate
a dead fly in the sugar bowl
an iridescent blue-black spiky husk
the tea-bag that dribbles on rough drafts
red spider and off-white formica
on its flight to the tea-stained bin
stuff
so much stuff
mouse droppings, fingernail parings
drifts of dust and soot to shift
shaving, shopping, straining the greens
the day is eaten away
and all there ever was was
snippets of time it seems
in dead of night
in broken sleep
while dust mites feed on scraps of skin
i'm shovelling smithereens
aboard my spaceship
