Two recent and rare visits to the capital have enabled me to sample britpo in action,
So I thought I'd post a brief report:
#1
Last Thursday I saw chris cheek and Sianed Jones doing music, poetry, satire and?.well?
voice/body special effects I suppose you could call it. A mix of cultures and media produced
what was for me a superb, mesmerising performance. The venue was the umpromising
Penny Black pub, Farringdon Road, and the audience was small (I reduced it by 10% by
leaving early to catch my train), but chris and Sianed did a professional job despite this?
good to see this type of work - poetry often posted
to this list in the context that its meant to be seen in - complemented by
music and other art forms. If this is half of Garam Masala, the full thing must
be quite something.
To chris cheek - thanks, and sorry I had to leave early.
#2
On 3rd November I was lucky enough to catch the Canadian Erin Moure at the SVP (3 Cups,
Sandland Street). Others have written this up already, so to be brief, she proved a witty
and engaging reader, her North American staccato tones contrasting with the english
accent of Andy Brown, who also read. Obvious French influence, and I particularly
enjoyed the poem which alternated lines of French and English. She held up pages to
show the written format of her work, and also gave context and background to some
of her poems.
Andy Brown gave an expressive reading, making good use of pause and stress to
set off his complex poetry. Again a small audience (who mostly seemed to know
each other).
Thanks to Lawrence Upton for this event.
