Ha! I might have guessed that once her browser had been pointed (and how
can anyone point a swarm of bees?) at that uncharacteristically soigne
image, Karlien would be on the case directly, insect-swat in hand.
For the majority of those with eating disorders (principally bulimia
nervosa) self-management of the condition according to the programmes
developed by Dr Janet Treasure at the Maudsley is demonstrably more
cost-effective than in-patient treatment. Furthermore, it conforms
better to feminist 'empowerment' principles than occupying the sick role
on a ward. Of course where the condition (more usually anorexia nervosa)
is life-threatening there may be no alternative to hospital treatment.
This is a typically male deployment of 'expertise' in order to confound
an honest (never 'mellifluous' - which would be to distract from the
substance for an irrelevant comment on appearance) intervention which
seeks only to extend an important debate.
