I agree about Romance languages - I did an Italian in Three Months course (took 12
months), and read Dante with Sinclair's prose translation, and even with that limited
knowledge of the language, it gave me an insight which no translation could really
have managed. I also revisited the Zukofsky translation, and Ric is right - it needs
to be read aloud, although I still think it can only be fully appreciated by Latin readers.
The examples of voice patterning in Doug's post were quite striking. I can also give an
example which I think shows where Zukofsky's coming from:
Ille me par esse deo videtur
He'll hie me, par is he? the God divide her (Zukofsky)
He seems like a god, that man (Sisson)
and then there's the middle ground:
O, it is godlike to sit selfpossessed (Bunting)
You pays your money and you takes your choice!
