Fred was wrong. Auden's first book had a first edition of 1000, and a
second edition which had a first impression of 1000, a second impression a
year later of 1500, a third in 1937 of 1517 and a fourth in 1939 of 1500;
The Orators went through two editions of 1000 each; Poems (1934) had sold
3575 by the end of the 30s; The Dog beneath the Skin had two editions of
2000 each (plus another 1400 in the USA); The Ascent of F6 sold 7,500 in
the 30s; Look Stranger had done 5850 by the end of 39, plus 3000 in the
USA; Spain sold just under 4,900 by 1940. Letters from Iceland was
published in an edition of 10,240 copies....etc etc etc
