Call for Papers
Eighth Annual Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century British Women Writers
Conference
September 24-26, 1999 at the Sheraton Old Town, Albuquerque, NM
Proposed Panel:
"Milton and Women Writers"
We are soliciting 15-minute conference papers for a proposed panel on
Milton and 18th- and 19th-Century British Women Writers. Twenty years
ago Gilbert and Gubar borrowed Virginia Woolf's phrase "Milton's Bogey"
and argued in _Madwoman in the Attic_ that Milton has been the ultimate
figure of patriarchal oppression for women writers. But there is
convincing evidence that women writers had more complicated and often
more positive relationships with him and his works. Indeed, some women
writers seem to have drawn on Milton-the regicide, heretic, and
divorcer-as a source of creative inspiration.
This panel seeks to provide a well-rounded consideration of Milton's
influence on 18th- and 19th-century British women writers. We are
especially interested in recovering a lost tradition of women reading
Milton and responding to him in their work, and in the way 18th- and
19th-century women writers read, critiqued, or rewrote him.
Papers that deal with any aspect of Milton or Milton's influence in
relation to the works of women writers from either of these centuries
are welcome.
Abstracts may be sent via e-mail or regular mail and must be received
by January 20.
