Department of Statistics
FACULTY POSITION IN BIOSTATISTICS
The Department of Statistics and its Division of Biostatistics seek applicants
for a faculty position starting in fall 1999, at the Research Assistant
Professor level. A PhD in statistics/biostatistics is required. Applicants
should have strong interests in methodological and interdisciplinary research
and strong teaching skills. The successful candidates will participate in
a developing academic biostatistics program that draws on the diverse interests and strengths of department faculty. We are especially interested in
increasing our research and educational activites in the areas of genetic
statistics and clinical trials, but strongly encourage applications
regardless of areas of interest.
With 33 faculty, 55 graduate students and 31 staff, the Department of Statistics
is one of the largest most comprehensive statistics departments in the world.
The department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in statistics, a track in
biostatistics for MS degree candidates, and planning to offer MS and PhD
degrees in biostatistics. The Division of Biostatistics has nine full-time
faculty, nine staff, and supports five to ten graduate students in a typical
year. Resources include state-of-the-art computing equipment on a network
of 54 UNIX workstations, 23 X terminals, and over 15 PC's with Pentium or
PowerPC processors. More information about the department is available on
the world-wide web at http://www.stat.ufl.edu.
The University of Florida is one of the five most comprehensive universities
in the U.S. with 24 schools and colleges, including six in its rapidly
progressing Health Science Center. It is located in the city of Gainesville
(Pop. 97,500) in North Central Florida. In September of 1995 Gainesville was
ranked by Money Magazine as the best place to live in America. For five
consecutive years, it has been tapped as Florida's most livable city and has
ranked among the leaders in the nation. A multitude of cultural and
recreational opportunities, usually found only in much larger cities,
contribute significantly to the high quality of life of faculty and their
families. More information about the university and city is available at
