Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit
Research Fellow in Modelling of HIV and other STDs
As part of its research programme on the epidemiology and control of
HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the Infectious
Disease Epidemiology Unit has a vacancy for a modeller to conduct
research on the comparative effectiveness of different intervention
strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. The research will employ a
microsimulation model of HIV and other STDs developed at Erasmus
University, Rotterdam, and will draw on detailed empirical data from
three community-randomized trials conducted in East Africa. This
three-year project is funded by the Department for International
Development, and will be carried out in collaboration with scientists
in Rotterdam, Tanzania, Uganda and the United States.
We are looking for applicants with a postgraduate qualification in
biostatistics or quantitative biology, and some practical experience
in the fitting of transmission models. A strong mathematical
background is desirable. Programming experience, some knowledge of
epidemiology and an interest in developing countries would be an
advantage. Periodic visits to Rotterdam and to the collaborating
research centres in East Africa will be required.
The appointment will be for three years, and will be made on the
School's non-clinical research scales, according to qualifications
and experience (œ18,081- œ21,542). The closing date for
applications is 7 November 1998. Please telephone the Personnel
Office on 0171 927 2203 or email [log in to unmask] quoting
reference HG1 for details of how to apply. Interested applicants are
invited to contact Dr Heiner Grosskurth (0171 927 2210;
