This course is aimed at researchers who need to use sample surveys,
especially those in the social, economic, educational and medical
sciences. Familiarity with basic statistical concepts will be
assumed.
The objectives of the course are:
a) to provide a practical introduction to the statistical issues
involved in designing and analysing sample surveys of persons,
households and businesses;
and
b) to enable participants to identify important issues in the
practical design of samples for social and economic surveys, and
think critically about these.
The course content will include sampling methods, key issues in
sample design, sampling frames and confidence intervals,
stratification, cluster sampling, and weighting for complex surveys
The course will include workshop sessions so that participants can
work through practical exercises.
Ray Chambers is Professor of Social Statistics at the University of
Southampton. His research interests lie in survey analysis and
interpretation, and computer intensive methods in statistics. He is
committed to consulting with business and government organisations on
ways of using the statistical method to improve performance.
Peter Lynn is Director of the Survey Methods Centre at SCPR. He
specialises in sample design for complex surveys and is committed to
integrating the statistical and practical aspects of survey design.
His research interests cover all aspects of survey methodology
including non-response, total survey error and methodology of
self-completion surveys.

Fee
350 pounds sterling (includes course materials, lunches and morning
and afternoon tea). Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries
are available which reduce the fee to 75 pounds sterling - applicants
must be full-time students, UK academic staff or ESRC-funded
researchers.
