The Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ALSPAC) is looking
to appoint up to three statisticians. Further information on the study is
outlined below. The posts are expected to be available from October 1st
for 1 year in the first instance. Starting salary will be based on the
research scale Grade 1B #15,735 upwards depending on qualifications and
experience.
The Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ALSPAC)
has the overall aim of identifying ways in which to optimise the health
and development of children.. Pregnant women resident in the three Bristol
based health districts, who had an estimated date of delivery between 1st
April 1991 and 31st December 1992 were invited to take part. We have a
database containing detailed information on 14,000 mothers and their
children.
Primarily information is obtained via postal questionnaire sent to the
mothers at roughly 4 monthly intervals however a 10% random sample
regularly attend Children in Focus (CiF) Clinics were more detailed data
is gathered such as physical measurements, psychological testing, hearing
and sight assessments, allergy testing and blood samples. Now our oldest
children are seven years old and we are about to start a clinic where all
14,000 children will be seen.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on a variety
of topics including nutrition, genetics and general maternal and child
health, development and well being. Applicants must have a postgraduate
qualification (at least MSc level) in statistics or a related subject.
Experience of using SPSS would be an advantage.
This is an exciting and valuable study and will provide the successful
candidate with an opportunity to work with a large data set and use a
variety of statistical methods and techniques
