International Centre for Health Society 1998 Seminar Series
Wednesday 18 March - 5pm RSVP attendance by 16/3/98
Speaker: Dr Mel Bartley, UCL
Title: 'Social position, social roles & women's health'
Abstract
Dr Bartley, using data from the Health and Lifestyle survey 1984 -5
and the Health Survey for England 1993, will examine :
- the extent to which health inequalities differ between women with
different combinations of domestic and labour market circumstances.
- why different groups of women were at the highest risk of poor
health in 1993 than in 1984.
- whether health inequality in women is still evident when validated
measures (the Erikson-Goldthorpe schema and the Cambridge scale) are
used, and
Validated measures has been used in sociological research on voting,
political attitudes and consumer behavior. It is likely that a new
validated measure will be used in the 2001 census.
This seminar is based on collaborative with the Nuffield College
Oxford which has been funded under the ESRC's Health Variations
Programme.
Dr Bartley is a principal research fellow in medical sociology for the
ICHS at UCL and her work has included research on health inequalities
in men and women with particular emphasis on measurement of social
position and circumstances, and the relationships of unemployment and
social mobility to health.
