Modelling of extreme hydrolgic events based on the partial duration series
(PDS) approach is considered. A recently developed regional estimation scheme
is described that includes the index-flood concept of scaling and the method of
L-moments for estimation of regional parameters, delineation of homogenous
regions, and determination of regional distributions. For a more general
assessment of regional homogeneity and estimation of regional parameters a
method based on generalized least squares regression is introduced. Simulation
studies reveals that the PDS method is generally more efficient than the
traditional method based on annual maximum series (AMS) for both at-site and
regional quantile estimation. Moreover, the PDS method is shown to be superior
with regard to both determination of homogenous regions and identification of
regional distributions. Finally, an application example is presented where the
PDS model is applied in a regional study of extreme rainfalls.
