Advert for a Biostatistician with ADVANTA Biotechnology, based in Tienen, Belgium

of the leaders in the breeding, production and marketing of seed in major agricultural crops,
such as sugar beet, corn, sunflower and oilseed rape.
ADVANTA has an opportunity for a biostatistician in the SES Europe facilities at TIENEN to support
the sugar beet biotechnology and breeding research activities.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The biostatistician will provide a statistical advisory service for sugar beet breeders and scientists.
Based at Tienen, the function plays a key role in supporting the sugar beet breeding research programmes
in a number of areas including molecular assisted breeding, pathology and yield experimentation,
evaluation and regulatory submission of transgenic lines.
He will advise the project teams, work groups or individuals on design, data analysis and interpretation
of field and laboratory experimentation. Within the groups, he will enhance the knowledge and application
of practical statistical concepts and will contribute to the optimal use of R&D resources to generate
data and results matching the objectives of the business.
PROFILE
Applications are invited from candidates with a degree in mathematics or statistics with a postgraduate
qualification in statistics or biostatistics, preferably with a 1-3 years experience in a R&D environment.
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the scientists and the breeders within
the Advanta sugar beet biotechnology and breeding groups. He will be interested in the application of
the up to date statistical techniques to biological sciences. He will be dynamic, proactive and motivated
to solve real problems quickly and efficiently and to do so he will have the ability to operate alone
or with external experts with defined budgets.
He will possess a good working knowledge of statistical programming tools, preferably SAS, and of usual
PC software.
Experience in statistical genetics or quantitative genetics is an asset.
He will have skills in organising own and others workloads and to work under time pressure. He will be
able to report back results in a way that meets the objectives of the project teams. He will assist
project leaders in structuring, and presenting data, results and conclusions from experiments.
He should have excellent skills for oral and written communication in English, Flemish and French.
The position reports to the biotechnology manager.
