SHORT COURSE: Survey Data Analysis III, Categorical Data Analysis
Presented by Peter Smith and John 'Mac' McDonald
Dates: 12-14 April 1999
Venue: University of Southampton
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This course will introduce participants to statistical modelling
with categorical response data, and will focus on log-linear
models. The course objectives are:
a) to introduce participants to some of the statistical methods of
analysing categorical survey data;
b) to provide hands-on experience of analysing data using the
statistical package SPSS
Topics will include the following: introduction to log-linear models,
multinomial logistic regression, graphical log-linear models, methods
for ordinal data, and exact tests for log-linear models.
The course will include computer practicals so that participants can
work through exercises.
Target Audience
The course is aimed at researchers who need to analyse categorical
survey data, especially those in the social, economic, educational and
medical sciences. Familiarity with statistical theory and topics such
as multiple regression and logistic regression will be assumed.
Course Materials
Participants will receive copies of the overhead transparencies and a
reading list.
The instructors
Peter Smith is Senior Lecturer in Social Statistics at the
University of Southampton. His research interests include modelling
categorical data, using log-linear, logistic and graphical models, and
the analysis of contingency tables with missing observations. He
teaches courses on log-linear modelling, graphical modelling and
exact tests.
John 'Mac' McDonald is Senior Lecturer in Social Statistics at the
University of Southampton. His general research interests are in
demography and social statistics. His statistical research interests
include categorical data analysis, particularly with multivariate
categorical responses, and exact tests for log-linear models and
logistic models. He teaches courses on generalized linear models and
contingency table analysis .
Fee
stlg350 (includes course materials, lunches, morning and afternoon tea).
Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available which
reduce the fee to stlg75 - applicants must be UK full-time students, UK
academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers.
