The successful applicant to this post will have a good
Mathematics/Statistics first degree, an
appropriate postgraduate qualification, a good publication record and
several years experience in
a Medical field. Experience with major packages such as S-Plus,
Stata, GLIM, Genstat and
SAS is essential and a general interest in computing and computer
systems desirable. The
postholder will be based in the Immunisation Division of the
Communicable Disease
Surveillance Centre (CDSC). He or she will be expected to provide the
statistical input to all the
division's research and surveillance activities, collaborate on
mathematical modelling projects
and ensure that the work of the division benefits from theoretical
developments in the field of
immunisation research. He/she will also be expected to contribute to
general Statistics Unit
work.
The Statistics Unit provides a statistical support service to the
research and surveillance
activities of the whole PHLS. There are also opportunities for links
with academic departments
and postgraduate institutions. Statisticians seconded to divisions of
CDSC are primarily
responsible for the work of that division, but are expected to
contribute to the general service
and training provided by the Unit. They will also be expected to
investigate, implement and
develop new methodologies where necessary and appropriate.
The work of the Unit is extremely varied ranging from biological
assays and designed
laboratory experiments, repeated measures from long-term observational
studies of patients,
clinical trials, large and small surveys, case-control studies, time
series and survival data
analyses. Of particular importance is the statistical support of
outbreak investigations.
Facilities include a powerful PC computer network, and a network of
SUN machines, with
access to a range of software including Epi-Info, Stata, Minitab,
SPSS, GLIM, Genstat, SAS
and S-Plus.
