At UEA research postgraduates have a period of study and research (3 years
for full-time PhD, for instance) and a further "registrarion only" year,
during which they write up the thesis. Tuition fees are payable in years
1-3; no fees of any kind are payable in the writing-up year. However, any
student who has not submitted the thesis at the end of the writing up
period is charged Continuation Fees: in the first year after the writing up
year, 222 pounds, in the second and succeeding years after the writing up
period, 446 pounds, until they either withdraw their candidature or submit
the thesis. The fees rise each year and are charged on an annual basis.
Students who do not submit within the normal 4 years (3 years period of
study, 1 year writing-up) should apply for an extension of their submission
date, but they are still liable for Continuation Fees, unless there are
particularly strong mitigating circumstances, e.g. prolonged illness.
