All students qualifying for a University award are invited to our Awards
Ceremonies.
The Graduands and Diplomates are presented to the Chairman of the Board of
Governors who confers their award.
Certificate and Diploma students wear a gown, hat and hood;
Undergraduates wear the same but have a 1'' coloured trim on the hood;
Masters wear the same but have a 2" coloured trim on the hood;
MPhils and PhD's have special gowns
We hold 8 ceremonies in July for the majority of students, 2 in August in
Malaysia for the large number of students at our franchised Colleges in that
country and a further 2 in November for all the resit students and those
Postgraduate students who hadn't completed their courses prior to July.

> Subject: Receiving diplomas etc at ceremonies
>
> Dear all
>
> Up to now Aston University has not invited candidates for diplomas
> and certificates (mainly postgraduate at present) to attend a
> graduation ceremony, they have just been sent their certificates in
> the post. A proposal is circulating that these candidates should be
> included in the ceremonies in future. Could I ask the following:
>
> 1. Which institutions invite diploma and certificate candidates to
> ceremonies and are we unusual in not doing so already?
>
> 2. How do you handle the terminology e.g. Congregation for the
> Conferment of Awards not Degrees, what is an alternative to graduand
> or graduation?
>
> 3. What do your diploma and certificate candidates wear as
> academic dress? E.g. just gown, full gown, hood and cap, and how do
> the designs differ to the candidates receiving degrees?
>
> 4. Any other issues we haven't thought of?
>
> I'm currently trying to compile a file of all questions asked on
> graduation in the last two years, and will make it available to

> Thanks in advance for your help.
