June 1st to 5th 1998 is Medical Research Week in Australia; an event
coordinated by the Australian Society for Medical Research. This year
Peter Doherty, Nobel Laureate, is our guest of honour and is visiting
each State capital. He was here on the Tuesday and gave a very
interesting view on the role and potential of Medical Research as an
activity that has direct therapeutic and economic feedbacks onto those
communities that actively participate.
A major feature of the programme in Tasmania is a poster display open
to health professionals, health scientists, clinicians, students,
nurses ... essentially all groups involved in healthcare. This year we
attracted 68 posters with titles ranging from Alzheimer's disease,
spider phobia, complementary therapies in ICU, metabolic bone disease,
paediatric blood banking, molecular biology in thyroid disease etc
