It has recently come to my attention that we autoclave all blood samples
leaving haematology and chemistry before they are sent for incineration.
The HSE guidelines say autoclaving should be used where organisms are
increased, e.g. in bacteriological culturing, but that uncultured bloods
do not need to be.
We also autoclave "sharps bins" which leave the lab (though those which
leave the wards are not autoclaved).
How many other labs do this? Our microbiologist feels that as we do it
we shouldn't stop. What opinions?
