When performing iron studies, may be it does not matter much whether you
report TIBC or transferrin. However, in dealing with iron toxicity (being
in Children's Hospital we frequently get iron toxicity workup), it is more
desirable to have TIBC values rather than transferrin values, so that you
can directly compare total iron values with TIBC (as both having the same
units of ug/dL) to evaluate degree of toxicity.
